Irish Fur Breeders' Association Statement


1. Fur Farming in Ireland is carried out in accordance with the Musk Rats Act, 1933 (Application to Mink Order) Order 1965. Fur farms are inspected by the Agricultural Inspectorate of the Department of Agriculture and Food under this legislation. Fur farms may be inspected by Department of Agriculture and Food Veterinary Inspectors under relevant EU and national legislation. 


2. Ireland is a member of the EU where there are 6,000 fur farms. 


3. Fur farming provides much needed employment in rural areas.


4. Fur animals are fed on by-products from fish, poultry and slaughterhouse processing. This provides an important service to the food industry.


5. Only EU approved fur-harvesting methods are employed on licensed fur farms .


6. Proposed new member states will bring additional fur farms into the EU.
