SUPPLY AND DEMAND – STRIVING FOR A BALANCE

The majority of European fur is sold through the two largest auction houses in Copenhagen (Denmark) and Helsinki (Finland). Here, supply and demand meet and try to strike a balance. Fur farmers must operate within a global free market. The fur market is not protected by government by virtue of intervention or subsidies. Over-production is therefore penalised immediately.

Annually, an average of between 25 and 30 million mink and fox skins find their way via buyers from all over the world to furriers workrooms. Ultimately it is there that the final product is created in the form of coats and hats as well as a great many trimmings. Important markets for fur garments include: North America, China, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Russia, Scandinavia and Spain.
